When a class 90 failed at Crewe on the 17th, a bizarre to/from Euston 47 move occured when 792 worked 1A82 from Crewe-Euston. With no other locos available, 47790 worked the return working - 1F24 to Liverpool throughout! This is 790 awaiting departure. Copyright: David Johnson |
47790 on standby at Warrington on Saturday 20th March, when half of the West Coast seemed to be closed at one time due to high winds! Copyright: Shaun Courtnage |

47792 on 1A82 as mentioned in the above photo. With only five EWS 47's remaining at the time it was very odd to see two of them at Euston at the same time! Copyright: David Johnson |
With the exception of the 27th/28th, every weekend in March had diesel hauled drags from Glasgow via the Glasgow & South Western route due to regular engineering work. On the 7th 47816 hauled 1M31 1324 Glasgow-Euston to Carlisle. Copyright: Shaun Courtnage |
Between the 18th and 24th, 47826 unusually hauled some north Wales services normally worked by HST's. It had not been since 4th December that an HST had not been available for these turns. It was once fairly common to have a loco hauled set deputising for Virgin West Coast HSTs. On its final day of the period, 826 worked 1D87 on which it was photographed at Prestatyn, and then hauled 1A77 1341 Holyhead-Euston THROUGHOUT. 47830 joined the party, hauling the return 1D89 1905 from London throughout and 1A49 on the 25th. A regular 47 hauled freight train is 4O77 0737 Westbury-Millbrook and 4V77 the 1348 return on which 47829 was photographed on the 4th. 829 is a regular in the south and is a favourite for local Freightliner Heavy Haul workings. It was seen between Redbridge and Romsey. Copyright: David Wood |
Daily diesel haulage, either 47's or 57's still happens between Preston and Longsight, ECS moves for Virgin West Coast, demonstrating this on the 27th was 47830 having attached to the rear of a terminating train from Euston. Copyright: Shaun Courtnage |
Amongst many trains dragged by 47s on the West Coast on the weekend of the 20th/21st was this 1135 Euston-Liverpool(1F17), seen at Birmingham International where 'NORTH STAR' was removed and the electric continued alone. Copyright: Colin Davenport |

An unusual view through a WCRC 'Pullman' car window of 47851 on standby at Carlisle on 20th March. Also present was WCRC's 47854 and 57601 on a tour from Sandy. Copyright: Nick Green |
47843 ran out of oil at Abergavenny on 27th March, one of the few 47 failures of the month (749 excluded!) 47853 was behind on the 0950 from Crewe, and unusually PUSHED 843s train all the way to Cardiff at a top speed of 25mph while still hauling its own train! A 1404 arrival at Cardiff missed the start of the rugby game by four minutes. Copyright: Shaun Courtnage |
47853 returned on the 1644 Cardiff-Crewe(1W89), photographed on completion of its service. 47812 ran light to Cardiff to work 47843s return service. Copyright: Alan Crawshaw |
